Unicorn Armor

In the late fifteenth century, European cavalrymen began outfitting their war horses with a type of head gear on which a spike was affixed. The spike thus protruded from the animal’s forehead. Known as a “panache,” the harness allowed the horse to perform as a weapon as well as a soldier’s mount.

Trapping the Unicorn Through Trickery

The animosity between the unicorn and the lion is expressed in another legend, which may have its roots in a twelfth-century letter that supposedly originated in an Ethiopian king’s court. The “letter” explains that the savvy lion uses a clever trick to capture a unicorn. The lion stands in front of a large tree and taunts his enemy until the unicorn charges, horn positioned to gore the lion. But at the last moment, the lion jumps away and the unicorn impales the tree, trapping itself. Naturally, the lion feasts on its prey.
